Julian Champagnie has exceeded expectations this season with the Spurs, earning a starting role with his impressive play on both offense and defense. The third-year forward's contributions have been crucial for the team, which currently boasts an 11-9 record as they approach the quarter mark of the 2024-25 season.
Champagnie has been tasked with a bigger role due to injuries to key players Keldon Johnson and Devin Vassell. Even as the Spurs approach full health, Champagnie’s strong play has earned him a consistent role in the rotation after averaging just 19.8 minutes per game last season.
This season, Champagnie is logging a career-high 29.5 minutes per game while averaging 12.0 points, 5.3 rebounds, 1.7 assists and 1.0 steals and starting in each of the Spurs’ 20 games. He’s also shooting the ball more confidently (43.6 FG%), an upgrade compared to his 40.8% mark in 2023-24.
Interim coach Mitch Johnson seems to like what Champagnie brings to the table on both ends of the court. Plus, having him in the lineup offers a bit more balance in the rotation, as it allows Vassell and Johnson to ease back in. Champagnie’s length is a defensive asset, allowing the Spurs to play aggressive defense with a lineup featuring himself, Harrison Barnes, Stephon Castle and Victor Wembanyama.
