New Delhi: In an interesting turn of events during Day 4 of the first Test against Bangladesh in Chennai, India’s Test skipper Rohit Sharma opted not to review a caught-behind appeal, even as wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant insisted on taking it upstairs. Despite Pant's persistence, Rohit stood by his decision. However, to his surprise, the replay displayed on the screen showed that the appeal was indeed a missed opportunity. This left the Indian skipper in a moment of frustration, with Pant by his side.
The incident occurred during the 62nd over of the innings when India’s Ravichandran Ashwin was bowling to Bangladesh batter Hasan Mahmud. The ball turned a bit with a steep bounce hitting the batter on the glove before being caught by Pant.
It seemed initially that the ball had hit the batter’s forearm before it was snapped back in for a catch behind the wicket, and Rohit Sharma sent Rishabh Pant’s challenge for a DRS review. However, later replays showed that the ball merely brushed the glove. If Rohit had come up with his review then, most likely the umpire would have sent the batter walking.
As the replay was showed on the giant screen, Pant even poked skipper Rohit saying the batter was out, he should at least look at the screen.
“Out tha, abe yaar replay dekh to lo (it was out, at least see the replay), Pant could be heard saying to Rohit.
However, the choice did not impact the Indians, as they successfully beat the match by an innings and 280 runs, and in the process, took the lead for the series by 1-0.
After the Test, Rohit Sharma was quick to congratulate Rishabh Pant, saying the latter is a great comeback man to Test cricket, adding he had performed so well after being away from the format for over 600 days.
