New Delhi: In a comical turn of events, South Africa all-rounder Andile Phehlukwayo found himself run out after venturing out of his crease while the ball was still in play. The impressive direct hit came from Afghanistan veteran Gulbadin Naid stationed at leg slip, catching Phehlukwayo out of his crease and reducing the Proteas to 36/7 in the first ODI at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium on 18th September, Wednesday.
Talking about the same runout which resembled the controversial run out of England’s Jonny Bairstow by Australia wicketkeeper Alex Carey during the second Ashes 2023 Test at Lord’s. The incident was been said against the ‘Spirit of Cricket’ and sparked a wild debate among fans and experts for several months to follow.
It is worth mentioning that according to the rule book, the fielding side are permitted to attempt a run out if the batter is off the crease while the ball is not dead.
If we talk about this match, Phehlukwayo had survived an LBW call with bowler Allah Ghazanfar appealing with the rest of the team members. Amid all of this, Phehlukwayo, unaware of the ball’s location, looked towards his partner at the non-striker’s end to sneak in a quick single.
Phehlukwayo took a little step out of the crease and Gulbadin Naid opted to take a chance for the direct hit and he did. He timed it to perfection as Phehlukwayo was out of the crease when the bails were taken off. The Afghanistan players started celebrating and were laughing on the wicket while the all-rounder had a disappointing look at the crease, looking towards the square leg umpire.
